Your eye health can be central to your quality of life, and we want to see you thrive. Being proactive with your eye care can make it possible to protect and preserve your vision.
It’s important to remember that routine eye exams are not only for eyewear. They’re also a great way to detect subtle eye diseases or other underlying health conditions that can go unnoticed, improving the chances of a possible positive outcome.
InfantSEE: Supporting Your Child’s Vision Development
Under the InfantSEE program, Dr. Gill can perform a vision assessment for infants 6–12 months old at no cost.
A child’s vision starts developing from birth and goes through different stages as they grow. These stages of development can be subtle, but they are important. The American Optometric Association recommends booking your child’s first eye exam at 6 months old to spot early signs of potential eye conditions and vision problems. Through InfantSEE, we can offer support for early detection with equipment that is often not used in basic vision screenings.
What You Should Know About Routine Eye Exams
Regular eye exams are an important part of proactive eye care. Many eye diseases don’t have obvious symptoms in their early stages, so you may not know there’s a problem until your vision changes.
During an eye exam at Redwater Eye Care, first we’ll get to know you, your health history, and your family history. Then we’ll perform multiple tests to assess different aspects of your vision and eye health.
Some tests will check for eye diseases, assessing the different parts of your eye. Others will determine whether you need glasses or contact lenses. At the end of the exam, we’ll have a good understanding of your eye health and vision needs.
Eye Exam Frequency
The right eye exam frequency can vary based on your personal health, but in general, these are the recommendations for adults:
- The average healthy adult aged 18—64 should have an eye exam every 2 years.
- Seniors 65 or older and adults with certain health conditions, such as diabetes, may need an eye exam every year.
The recommendations for children are as follows:
- First eye exam at 6–12 months old
- 1 eye exam at 3–5 years old
- 1 eye exam before first grade & 1 eye exam each year between 6 & 17 years old
In-Depth Diagnosis with OCT
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging technique used to generate a picture of your retina. This technology helps diagnose and manage many eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
OCT testing is something we use to further assess your eye health and your risk for developing different eye conditions.
